ALTHOUGH Vietnam began tuna fishing 15 years ago, the country has not yet formed a national tuna association, which could hinder its budding industry. Tuna fishing has brought increased export earnings into the country, and helped reduce poverty among fishermen in the south-central region. Local tuna associations have been set up in three provinces, but experts say a Vietnam Tuna Fishing Association should be established to promote Vietnamese tuna and sustainable development. Despite the gloomy financial climate, Vietnamese tuna exports reached US$188 million in 2008, up 25% from 2007.
