Italian aflatoxin worry

ITALIAN hazelnut producers are expressing their concerns to the authorities. The recent approval from Codex Alimentarius of an increase in maximum aflatoxin limits, from 3ppb (part per billion) to 10ppb (FOOD - NEWS 18 J uly) , is worrying the Italian industry. The region of Piemonte, in particular, sees this lower standard as a menace for local producers threatened by extra-EU competition and consumer safety. In addition, competition from Turkey is becoming extremely fierce and Italian producers are finding it more and more difficult to compete.
