AUSTRALIA's macadamia crop is forecast to come in significantly lower than last year's 42 000 tonnes. Poor weather has reduced the 2008 New South Wales crop (which accounts for 80% of total Australian output) and local press predicts that the national A$1.60/kg farmgate price may increase by another A$0.10/kg. Australian Macadamia Society industry development manager, Kim Jones, said a lack of sun during the north coast's summer had prevented oil accumulation in the nuts.
