FIJI's tuna longline fishing industry is on the brink of collapse, according to a company in the country. Graham Southwick, managing director of Fiji Fish Marketing Group, said he had been lobbying the government for years about the impact of extra taxes imposed by the ministry of finance on an industry that is already struggling with high fuel prices and the cost of getting fish to market. It is becoming more difficult to compete with foreign fleets, which pay no tariffs, and unless the government acts, the industry will close, he warned.
