This article was originally published in Foodnews

AMBEWELA Products (Pvt) Ltd, a Sri Lankan dairy company, is to invest LKR1.0 billion (US$9.3 million) in a new dairy plant. Ambewela Farms will make a variety of milk packs and dairy products such as cheese and yogurt, manufactured to the highest international standards and (crucially) made with locally produced milk rather than imported powder. The plant has a capacity to process 9.6 million litres of milk and milk-based products annually. Sri Lanka's liquid milk requirement is around 1.0 billion litres per year, and it currently imports about 60 000 tonnes of milk powder, equivalent to 80% of its requirements.
