INDIAN cashew production is likely to get a boost with the Directorate of Cashew and Cocoa Development taking steps to increase area planted to cashews to one million ha by 2012. At present 874 000ha is utilised for cashew farming. The Directorate hopes to achieve a 15% increase in a bid to reduce imports of raw cashews. India's domestic cashew processing and exporting industry imports over 600 000 tonnes per year with the majority coming from African nations.
