Excellent almond bloom

CALIFORNIA's almond season may have been running late this year, but now that favourable weather has finally arrived it has provided the onset of an excellent bloom. Farmers had a worrying start to the year, when storms hit the US destroying some of the crops. However, much to the delight of the farmers, the weather has now turned, meaning the bloom has peaked quickly with a good overlap among varieties. Even though the bloom was late, this should not affect the harvest which is still due to begin in late July. Some farmers are already reporting a much better bloom when compared with last year. The main concern for the industry now will be if a frost hits within the next six weeks, as the nuts are still at a delicate stage.
