Peach cannery closuresThis article was originally published in Foodnews
THE imminent closure of CanGro's two Ontario-based processing plants (FOODNEWS 11 January) could severely affect Canada's deciduous processing industry, according to the local press. CanGro said that the two plants, based in St Davids and Exeter respectively, will face closure unless a buyer is found. Growers in the area believe that shutdown is inevitable, since it is now cheaper for processors to buy fruit from foreign suppliers like Greece and China. The shutdown of the two factories would therefore effectively remove any market for processing peaches (clingstone) and pears in Ontario, and growers are faced with the prospect of pulling out their acres.
