CONSUMPTION of farmed shrimp has grown five-fold in Brazil in recent years. According to the trade director at the State Secretariat of Aquaculture and Fishery, Guilherme Crispim, just 10% of this type of shrimp was consumed in Brazil in 2003, a total that has now risen to between 60-70%. Rio de Janeiro, according to the state's Association of Fishermen and Fisheries, has one of the highest consumption of grey shrimp in the country, at 23kg per person per year. The USA's antidumping actions ( FOODNEWS passim ) make it impossible for Brazil to export shrimp to the US, and so the country is targeting the EU.
