THE bitter fight between French and Chinese dairy companies Danone and Wahaha (FOODNEWS passim) has become a major political issue after French President Nicolas Sarkozy stepped into the fray during his recent visit to Beijing. He urged Chinese officials to coax Hangzhou Wahaha founder Zong Qinghou back to talks to resolve the dispute. Zong's lawyer is reported to have suggested a reconciliation proposal during Sarkozy's visit, in which both parties would give up part of their legal claims in order to avoid a drawn-out legal battle.
