Blue Diamond expansionThis article was originally published in Foodnews
BLUE Diamond, the world's largest almond processor, has expanded its plant in Salida, California. New sorting lines and additional cold storage space form part of a US$20 million investment, disbursed over three years. The extra capacity is particularly needed, because this year's Californian almond crop is predicted to come in at a record 1.33 billion lbs, and could be as much as 1.50 billion lbs in 2010. The Salida plant, opened in 1969, handles about two-thirds of Blue Diamond's raw almonds and packs them as whole kernels before roasting and further processing.
