Smuggled Dr Pepper

This article was originally published in Foodnews

CUSTOMS officials in Malta have seized a consignment of canned soft drinks, hidden inside a container that held motor vehicles, shipped from the UK. Enforcement officers seized 255 cartons of Dr Pepper, representing a total of 6 120 cans. Canned soft drinks are forbidden in Malta under a law that specifies that non-alcoholic beverages may only be traded and consumed in refillable glass bottles subject to a deposit and return scheme. This is to reduce the waste deposited in landfill sites. This is not the first such seizure this year: in January, a consignment of canned beverages from Italy was confiscated (FOODNEWS 19 January).
