Tuna supply downThis article was originally published in Foodnews
TUNA supply from General Santos City in the Philippines has declined by 20-30% in recent months. The industry is blaming global warming and an oil price hike. The rise in the cost of fuel means fewer fishing expeditions. Diesel has gone over the PHP30/ litre mark. Fuel and lubricants make up about half the cost of a tuna expedition. But, the head of the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority, Miguel Lamberte, also said the drop in tuna supply was normal for the lean season and that weather had been "erratic".
