JONES Soda Co, a US soft drinks maker, has entered into an agreement with three firms (Pharma Foods International Co Ltd of Kyoto, Japan, Mitsubishi Corporation of Tokyo, Japan, and Mitsubishi International Food Ingredients Inc of Dublin, Ohio) for exclusive rights to use the ingredient Pharma Gabatm in its beverages. Pharma Gabatm, a natural form of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), is widely used in Japan. Instead of producing a stimulant effect like caffeine, this ingredient is thought to promote mental focus. It has just been granted GRAS (generally recognised as safe) status in the US. The new beverages containing the ingredient are expected to roll out by winter this year.
