Russia ends nut tariffs

THE Russian Federation has decided to abolish the import tariff rates on certain nut products including cashews, almonds, in-shell hazelnuts and sesame seed, according to the US Department of Agriculture. The tariff rate for these types of nuts has hitherto been 5%, but the decision to remove the tariffs has been spurred by surging world prices and the Russian government's concern that this will affect development of the country's confectionery industry. During the first nine months of 2006, Russian nut imports fell 18% to 16 700 tonnes, compared with the same period in 2005.
