Burma heads for rice record

BURMA could export 1.2m tonnes of rice in 2012/13 (ending March), having reached 1.01m tonnes by December, which would be the highest in 46 years, according to Win Myint from Burma’s Ministry of Commerce. Exports fell to between 166,000 and 787,000 tonnes between 1974 and 1988 when Burma had an isolationist policy. Easier transport links to fulfil Chinese demand is one reason for the rise.
