THE US sugar industry has seen the number of people it employs contract sharply but economic activity has jumped, LMC International said in a report on Wednesday. In 1993/94, LMC said the total number of people working in the industry stood at around 253,200. By 2009/10, the number has declined to just under 130,000 or a fall of nearly 50%. Economic activity generated by the US sugar industry jumped to $19.4bn in 2009/10, from $10.67bn in 1993/94.
