TOMATOES were the most popular fresh vegetable in Switzerland in 2012, according to recent statistics, with consumption of about 8.5 kilogrammes of tomatoes per head. More than half of produce consumed on the Swiss market (60%) is grown in the country, while 40% is imported. Carrots took the second highest spot with 8.3 kg per head, followed by iceberg lettuce (4.7 kg/head), peppers (4.0 kg/head) and onions (3.5 kg/head).
