Sockeye run forecast

This article was originally published in Foodnews

ALASKA Department of Fish and Game has forecast a Bristol Bay sockeye salmon run of 26.03 million fish in 2013. The range is set at 17.30 million-34.76 million fish, with a commercial common property harvest of 17.53 million salmon. This run is 33% below the 10-year mean of 39.06 million and 20% lower than the long-term mean of 32.38 million. Forecasts about upcoming salmon runs are difficult, but they are usually accurate to within 10% – the forecast in 2012 was 3% above the total run and forecasts since 2001 have averaged 7% below the actual total run.
