THE Unió de Llauradors in Spain is proposing purchasing local almond varieties to ensure survival of the crop. The association is hoping that the processing sector “will choose the local almond over the US variety, since if production in many parts of inner Valencia is abandoned they will inevitably be converted into desert with serious economical and environmental consequences”. Demand for almonds is significant in Requena-Utiel and for that reason companies are making significant purchases in the area. For this reason “there has been a revaluation of prices”.
