SOUTH African research ship, the Africana, departed for its annual survey into the biomass of sardines and anchovies on 23 October. The survey has been carried out every year since 1984, and is key in determining the total allowable catches (TACs) for these species. South Africa’s Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries reports that the pelagic fishery is the country’s largest fishery by volume, at 400 000 tonnes each year, and its second most important by value, at ZAR1 billion (USD115.33 million).
