SRI LANKA opened Tess Mekera, its third largest canned fish factory last month, with LKR170 million (USD1.3 million) invested into it by the Tess Group of Companies, reports the Ceylon Daily News. Currently the government expenditure on canned fish imports is LKR5.12 billion each year and the country’s Minister Rajitha Senaratne and president Mahinda Rajapaksa aim to reduce the country’s reliance on imported canned fish. The new factory produces 48 000 cans of fish per day. The other two Sri lankan factories have a joint production capacity of 20 000 cans of fish.
