CANNED vegetables and fruit producers in Romania can only use one-third of their production capacities, according to Freshplaza.com. Natalie Popow writes: volumes of stock have decreased considerably due to a severe drought that led to a low crop yield this year. Some producers have had to import fruit and vegetables from Bulgaria and Macedonia to make up the shortfall. The selling volumes of Stirom, Romania’s largest can supplier, rapidly reduced by half. Overall, Romanian production volumes of canned food this year are predicted to be 50% less than last year, at some 160 000 tonnes.
