Apple crop downgraded

HAILSTORMS that damaged Washington’s apple crop (FOODNEWS 30 July) are dashing hopes that a large harvest in the US state would make up for the frost damage wrought in Michigan (FOODNEWS 25 May) . Local media reports that farmers in the state expect the harvest will be anything between 10-25% down from earlier expectations, though it will be somewhere close to the five-year average of 100-110 million cartons. Already, marketers are talking about packing fresh fruit as “hail grade”: with exterior blemishes, but good internally.
