US bean cannery to be closed

TRUITT Brothers Inc of Oregon is to shut down its green bean cannery in Salem. Neil Murray writes: the company operates manufacturing and packing plants in Salem and in New Bernstad, Kentucky. The reason for the factory closure is that the US state of Wisconsin is able to produce at lower cost. Truitt has also stopped canning other seasonal crops (pears, cherries and plums) in Salem because it cannot compete on cost. However, canning non-seasonal products, including pumpkins and pinto, black and kidney beans, is still viable. Last year, Truitt shifted its pear canning from Salem to Del Monte Foods’ plant in Washington (FOODNEWS 8 June 2011) .
