Organic sales boom

RETAIL sales of organic food in Denmark continue to defy the credit crunch, increasing 7% to DKK5.5 billion (USD970 million) in 2011, according to the Danish Statistical Office, Danmarks Statistik. The organic food market share has now reached 7.6%. While the value of sales of fruit and vegetables were unchanged compared with 2010, values increased for the three other main groups of grocery, dairy and meat products. Retail sales value of organic milk, cheese and eggs increased by 10%, and this was the largest single group with a turnover of DKK1.92 billion in 2011. However, sales of organic meat and associated products which increased by 12% over poor sales in 2010 to DKK369 million, equalled the sales level of 2008.
