THE West of Scotland herring fishery was awarded MSC certification on 25 April at the Brussels seafood show. EU fisheries commissioner, Maria Damanaki, presented the award to the Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group (SPSG). The North Sea herring fishery’s MSC certification is valid until 2013, and the SPSG aims to have the fishery re-assessed so that it remains continuously certified. British canned herring exports were up last year, at 1 145 tonnes, but the industry may see this certification as a chance to sell the fish on more profitable premium markets.
