THE German herring fleet is having a record season, The Local reports. Catching is up to five times better than usual, with daily catches of up to 100 tonnes. The usual rate is closer to 20 tonnes per day. Germany is the world’s second exporter of canned herring. Last year to November, it exported 24 252 tonnes of the fish, a year-on-year rise of 16% and a distinct rise compared with most of the past decade. The top five markets for this were Poland, the Netherlands, Austria, the UK and the US. Germany is a net importer of canned herring. It took 36 572 tonnes of the fish in 2011 to November, mostly from Poland and Scandinavia.
