MODERNISATION of nut growing areas in Spain is vital to the future of the sector, the president of SAT Alto Aragon Almonds, Jesús Alastrué, has announced. At a recent sector assembly members were told about subsidies for nuts and CAP reforms. Ramón Ballarín, a member of SAT Almonds, added that the EU wants to protect and strengthen producer organisations. Jesús Alastrué said that the industry must continue working with “keenness and optimism” and added that they were talking about a cultivar “that is profitable to process and if prices continue like they are then all the better”. This season SAT Alto Aragon Almonds collected above 2 million kg of the nut. In December prices were EUR3.85/kg for marcona, EUR3.05/kg for largueta and EUR3.0/kg for the common variety.
