PERUVIAN organic food exports are expected to total USD322 million in 2012, double the value seen in 2008, according to Peru’s Commission for the Promotion of Tourism and Exports (Promperu). William Arteaga, agriculture coordinator at the organisation, said most of the country’s organic products were exported to Europe. The biggest markets are the US, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Sweden. The EU took 64% of Peru’s organic exports, and the US 31%. However, the Asian market, which presently takes just 3% of exports (the same as South America) is growing. “We are entering the Asian market very fast and the new destinations which show very good opportunities, especially in the short term, are Japan and the Republic of Korea. Hopefully China’s big market is also suitable,” he said.
