Pushing up onion prices

This article was originally published in Foodnews

THE ONION producer association in Castilla La Mancha (PROCECAM) is pushing for an improvement in production processes and better use of resources. It is hoped that such reforms will boost the sluggish Spanish onion market, with prices currently far below the cost of production. PROCECAM is to work with software firm ISAGRI to study production costs involved in onion growing, while also looking at traceability and energy efficiency, with the aim of equipping producers with the correct tools to make onion cultivation profitable. Spain is currently the second largest European producer of onions with 1.5 million tonnes a year, and Germany and the UK are keen importers of the Spanish vegetable. This season, due to good weather conditions, onion quality was said to be exceptional.
