Italian orange production back to stronger levels seen in 2009

ITALIAN orange production for the 2011/2012 marketing year (which starts in November) is expected to be at about 2.3 million tonnes, according to the latest forecast from the USDA. Italy produces around 4% of the world’s orange crop and 37% of the EU-27’s production. A large part of Italian orange production consists of the ‘blood’ varieties, planted chiefly in Sicily and Calabria and used mainly for fresh consumption.
