Aragon almond crop drops

This article was originally published in Foodnews

AGRARIAN organisation Asaja Aragón has said that 2011 has not been a good year for dried fruit and nuts, particularly for almonds grown across more than 64 000 hectares in the region. The area was expecting a decent crop due to a lack of frosts, but a drought, pollination problems and increasing raw material costs led to a poor harvest at under 8 000 tonnes of almond kernel. Prices have remained similar to last year, around EUR1.00 below production costs, reaching just EUR3.00 with the exception of Marcona almonds which is above EUR3.50 as production gets smaller.
