DEMAND for the exotic atemoya fruit is encouraging producers to expand orchards in Brazil’s São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Paraná states. Producers sold atemoya fruit for BRL4.5-5.0 (USD0.80-0.89/kg) per kilo at the peak of the 2011 harvest, compared with last year’s average of BRL2.8/kg. Cultivation of atemoya, a hybrid fruit between the sugar apple and cherimoya, began in Brazil 20 years ago. Now the country is a leading exporter, trailing only Australia,
