New dairy plant opens

SYNLAIT of New Zealand has opened a new NZD100 million (USD75 million) infant milk formula plant at Dunsandel, south of Christchurch. At the same time, the company has launched its Pure Canterbury brand, comprising infant and adult nutritional formulations, functional food ingredients, and specialised milk powder products. A lot of the plant’s production is destined for China. Chinese company Bright Dairy bought a controlling interest in Synlait last year (FOODNEWS 23 July 2010) . Chinese consumers still distrust indigenous dairy products after the melamine scandal.
