Irish cheese destroyed

This article was originally published in Foodnews

ALMOST 22 tonnes of imported Irish cheddar cheese havc been destroyed in South Africa, reports the country’s Times newspaper, because it was contaminated with E.coli bacteria. “The results were confirmed by independent tests conducted on request of the exporter and the consignment was rejected by the [Durban] Port Health,” said Bertus de Jongh, chief executive of South Africa’s Milk Producers’ Organisation (MPO), in a statement. The MPO has requested a ban on imports of Irish dairy products until their safety had been confirmed, saying they often do not meet South African health and safety standards. It also claims that their low prices could damage the domestic dairy industry.
