This article was originally published in Foodnews

RUSSIA became the world’s largest importer of apples and pears last year, according to the latest USDA report, with a combined total of 1.52 million tonnes of fruit (1.11 million tonnes were apples). Fruit consumption in Russia is rising and reached 71kg per person in 2010, up 10% from 2009. This trend is likely to continue, supported by a trend toward healthy diets in Russia, adds the USDA.
