THE Global Stevia Institute (GSI), established by stevia sweetener manufacturer PureCircle, says it is focusing on work in the UK market ahead of the product’s EU approval later this year. The GSI has appointed Dr Margaret Ashwell to its advisory board. From 1994-2007, Ashwell acted as research coordinator for the UK Food Standards Agency’s research programme on nutrient status and function. She will lead GSI outreach in Europe with increased attention to the UK market. The GSI said it and PureCircle had performed a study in July which indicated that “more than 70% of adults in the UK are more conscious of their daily sugar intake than they were five years ago”.
