Dispute over beverage claims

This article was originally published in Foodnews

COCONUT water brand Vita Coco is facing a lawsuit in a Manhattan federal court over its health claims, according to media reports. The New York Times reported that a Florida lawyer, Stacey Fishbein, has filed a case on behalf of all purchasers of the beverage since 2007. According to the newspaper, the court filing says Vita Coco falsely claims to have “15 times the electrolytes found in sports drinks”. But a recent study found that “at least some” Vita Coco flavour varieties have “significantly less” sodium and magnesium than advertised, the filing states. A Vita Coco spokesman is quoted as saying: “We are confident that. . . our products’ nutrition labels are accurate and in compliance with the FDA.”
