THE PHILIPPINES has inaugurated its first ever salmon and seafood processing and smoking facility in General Santos City. The Big Glory Bay Salmon and Seafood Company is a joint venture between Prime Foods New Zealand (PFNZ) and tuna processing firm Alliance Select Foods International. The new PHP60-million (USD1.4 million) facility has a capacity of processing two tonnes of salmon daily and is located inside Alliance's tuna canning plant in Tambler. This means Big Glory Bay has access to existing management, engineering, maintenance facilities and staff. It is targeting Australia, Asia and Europe as markets for its products. General Santos City mayor Darlene Antonino-Custodio said the construction of the salmon processing facility will help provide impetus to the local economy, especially since the tuna industry has suffered setbacks recently in the form of low tuna catches and rising fuel costs.
