Hungary plans drinks levyThis article was originally published in Foodnews
HUNGARY plans to levy a HUF10 (USD0.05) per litre tax on sugar-sweetened soft drink producers from September. The proposal is at draft legislation stage. If passed, which it is expected to, the tax would rise to HUF15 (USD0.08) per litre from 2012. Energy drinks will be taxed at HUF 300/litre (USD1.61). The moves are part of wider junk food taxes that the government hopes will improve Hungarian diets while generating more revenue for the country's debt-ridden healthcare system.
