FARMERS in Brazil's Planaltina region have produced giant passion fruit, according to Revistagloborural.globo.com. The 800g fruit are four times larger than normal. The variety is a hybrid created in a programme initiated in 2008 by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Company (EMBRAPA). Early yields have shown to be 72 tonnes per hectare. Farmers need to pay careful attention to the soil, phytosanitary controls and irrigation, as well as manual pollination and pruning, and it is also recommended to plant three varieties of fruit to diversify the pollen.
