Vine tomato price slump

This article was originally published in Foodnews

DEMAND for vine tomatoes in Europe is falling, although volumes are normal for the time of year, and the market imbalance is depressing prices. The situation is likely to get worse in the next few weeks as supplies increase. Dutch traders report that the producer price for vine tomatoes in week 19 was around EUR0.60 per kilogram (USD0.86/kg), which is almost 50% less than in week 15 (EUR1.15/kg or USD1.65/kg). Growers in the Netherlands face increased competition this year from all over Europe, Groenten & Fruit reports.
