A third of food wastedThis article was originally published in Foodnews
AS much as one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted annually, equating to 1.3 billion tonnes per year, according to a new report for the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Per capita food waste by consumers in Europe and North America is as high as 95-115 kg/year, compared to only 6-11 kg/year in sub-Saharan Africa and south/south-east Asia. Fruits, vegetables, roots and tubers have the highest wastage rates of any food. The report also noted that 'three for two' offers and oversized ready meals encourage consumers to buy more than they need from supermarkets.
