Soft drinks fall in BrazilThis article was originally published in Foodnews
SALES of carbonated soda drinks (CSDs) in Brazil fell by 3% in the first quarter of 2011, compared with the same period last year, writes Vladimir Pekic. "The reference year is admittedly very strong, yet the fact remains that sales really stopped growing and there was even a drop in terms of sales volume," said Andrea Alvares, president of the beverages division at PepsiCo Brazil. "The carnival [season] this year was very weak," explained Claudio Fontes, president of Ajebras, a local subsidiary of the Peruvian beverages group AJE, reported daily Valor Econômico. "It was a combination of economic, climatic and even calendar-related factors," said Alvares, adding that PepsiCo expects to "recover its growth already in the second quarter and continue growing throughout the year".
