Black Forest cakes cannedThis article was originally published in Foodnews
A BAKERY in Germany's Black Forest has started canning the region's famous Black Forest cherry torte cake and has started shipping it to consumers as far away as Azerbaijan and Brazil. Johannes Ruf, a baker in the area, said he came across the idea after his sister living in the US began requesting baked goods from their home village of St. Peter in southwest Germany. The family bakery has sold more than10 000 of the canned torte cakes, which stay fresh for two years, since it started selling them in November. "Many colleagues said it would not work and many said we would not sell any," Ruf said of the cakes, which are baked in a tin that is then sealed and shipped.
