More carrots from FranceThis article was originally published in Foodnews
THE AREA under carrots for the fresh market in France increased by 3% to 8 567 hectares in the 2010/11 season (ending April 2011), continuing the trend of the past three seasons. As a result, production is up 5% on last season, at 331 304 tonnes. However, this is 2% down on the five year average. Supplies to the market are dwindling as the end of the season approaches. French consumers are losing interest and the market is being propped up by exports. The production price index in March was 18% down on the year before and 4% below the average of the past five years, the Ministry of Agriculture reports.
