Longer citrus shelf life

US SPECIALITY chemicals company Lanxess AG has developed a new citrus flavour for the soft drinks industry that helps to increase the shelf life of the beverage. Rob Selby writes: TIts beverage technology unit has designed Natural Choice, a fruity, lemon-tasting formulation, consisting entirely of natural ingredients. The main constituents are citrus fruit peel oil, lecithin and beeswax. Typical applications include non-carbonated soft drinks containing fruit juice such as still lemonade and isotonic sports drinks, the company said. The company, which has previously designed Velcorin – a microbial control agent for the cold sterilisation of drinks from CSDs to flavoured waters to wines – is initially rolling out the product to beverage makers in the US, before wider distribution.
