Decline in tuna exports

CANNED tuna remained the top export earner for Southwestern Mindanao last year, according to a report from the Philippines' Department of Trade and Industry. However, sales dropped to PHP189 million from PHP204 million (USD4.4 million) in 2009. Volume exports were 7 600 tonnes, down from 8 300 tonnes. The Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission ban on purse seine fishing, imposed on 1 January 2010, is being blamed for the decline.
