DESPITE its recent economic difficulties, the Turkish hazelnut growers' union (Fiskobirlik), has said it intends to get back in the market and is preparing to buy 50 000 tonnes of hazelnuts to process and sell. Anatolia news agency reported that the chairman, Lufti Bayraktar, did not give a purchase price, but said the hazelnuts would be bought at "the price that is shaped according to market conditions". According to reports from the country last year, Fiskobirlik was having problems paying farmers for product, and was appealing for government support (FOODNEWS 30 July) . Bayraktar said the union has lost a great deal of power due to internal financial issues, but added: "We are doing our best to resume our past grandeur. Fiskobirlik is a very big and important actor."
